After returning from Lanzarote, instead of feeling blue, I find myself still in the mood for some island exploration. This was surprisingly still possible, thanks to the great diversity of landscapes that the city of Prague has to offer. Among the numerous islands floating on the Vltava River, Stvanice shines as an especially cool destination, equipped with a vibrant cultural scene and an abundance of activities. Come along on this diverse journey with this comprehensive visit to the Stvanice island.
NIGHTLIFE & CULTURE
Together with Ankali, this is the club where the local underground scene was born. Its history is more than captivating; originally a café-restaurant of an ice hockey stadium where the Czechoslovak national team won their first world championship in 1947. This was built by the renowned architect Fuchs, therefore the name. Before Fuchs2, another club called Face 2 Face was there, but the style was rather mainstream. Now we have an underground, open-minded, and tolerant space for people of all colors, religions, sexualities, which serves fresh music and DJs from all over the world. The place to go if you’re in Prague and want to shake your hips.

In addition to many theater performances, which take place almost every other day, Villa Štvanice features a trendy café and bar with both indoor and outdoor seating. The café is open daily from 14:00 to 00:00. However, please note that guests are required to remain silent during the performances.

Next to its “bigger” brother, which hosts parties mainly on the weekends, Bike Jesus is a venue where cool concerts and smaller parties take place almost every day. Check their program and you’ll surely find something that suits you.
SPORT
As crazy as it might sound, with a little help of Global Warming, Prague has the potential to become the new era surfer paradise. The lock on the river creates a mighty wave, which people have recently started using as a training ground for surfing. If this is not a unique, extraordinary experience from Prague, then I don’t know what it is.
The Vltava river used to be a very popular swimming venue in previous centuries. Until the 1970s, part of Štvanice was even a naturist resort. Today, Prague is bringing back these good old times and reviving the old tradition of bathing in the Vltava river. 😎

Štvanice island is also home to the biggest indoor skatepark in Prague.
The tennis area
In 1986, a new modern clay court with a capacity of 8000 spectators was built here, becoming the venue for ATP and WTA Tour tournaments.
INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE
Štvanice hydroelectric power plant
The Hydroelectric Power Plant Štvanice, established in 1912 on Štvanice Island along the Vltava River in central Prague, is a testament to the city's industrial heritage. With an installed capacity of 2.4 MW, it generates electricity from the river's energy, contributing to the local power grid.
THE BRIDGES
In total, 3 bridges run over the island of Štvanice, and two of them are very unique.
The Negrelli Viaduct is, after the Charles Bridge, the second oldest bridge in Prague and is used only for railway. This viaduct stands in contrast to the recently constructed minimalist HolKa Bridge, which serves only pedestrians and has cool night lighting.
The third bridge is called Hlávkův, and it is crucial for car and tram transportation between both sides of the river. This bridge is in great need of reconstruction because it is at the end of its lifespan.
